H5N1 Avian Influenza: Current Situation
As of February 2025, the H5N1 avian influenza virus continues to affect birds, mammals, and pose risks to pets:
· Cats: At least 20 pet cats across the United States have tested positive for H5N1 since December 2024. The mortality rate for cats infected with H5N1 is approximately 67%.
· Dogs: While dogs can contract H5N1, no cases have been reported in the United States as of January 2025. Dogs typically experience milder symptoms compared to cats.
· Transmission: The virus can spread through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated surfaces, or consumption of raw, infected poultry products.
· Northwest Naturals product recall: On December 24, 2024, Northwest Naturals voluntarily recalled one batch of their 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food due to H5N1 contamination. This recall was initiated after a house cat in Washington County, Oregon, died from H5N1 infection linked to consuming this product14.While this incident highlights potential risks associated with raw pet food, it's crucial to note that:
o The recall was limited to specific batches with "Best if used by" dates of 05/21/26 B10 and 06/23/2026 B1.
o Subsequent testing of an unopened package of the same product is presumed to have been negative for H5N1, raising questions about the source of contamination
